A disruptive world in between your fingers and a mobile screen (Digital Media)

Imagine a part of life, where you need to wake up with a rooster crowing and need to take a route to a destination in your car and you ask people in sideways to know your directions or calling to your friend to know what she had for dinner or maybe it takes a couple of days to reach you the hot news about present scenario in politics.

Tough to imagine right!

Give me a YES! If you do or have come across these things in everyday life:

If you binge-watch TV Shows, People around you Instagramming food, Using the phone’s in the bathroom or in a queue.

All of this has to do with something, which literally changed our lifestyle or the way how we are consuming information. Yes! I am talking about Digital Media.

Let’s start with basic – “Media, it’s a plural word came from medium and it signifies the communication tool while transmitting a message from one sender to another”. This is the definition I read in my textbooks while I was referring to digital media.

I thought this is the right place for me to start with if I want to know how digital revolution happened & what all are its impacts. Every being in this world communicate with another one through a way of the encoded message, either be numbers or letters or emotions or may be a combination of all three.

A process of the endless encoded message becomes a language and later a mainstream knowledge sharing process & that’s how human communicated their experiences and understood consequences of ‘n’ no of factors and their compositions.

When I was in college, I heard the term digital media.

Karan Shah, Founder of IIDE said (Paraphrased)

“Digital media has a significant broad and complex impact on society and culture, it combining with the Internet and personal computing, digital media has caused disruptive innovation in publishing, journalism, public relations, entertainment, education, commerce, and politics.”

A world before disruption of Digital media is tough to imagine, the reach towards mass audience for latest news & streaming platform to watch, the process of collecting and understanding information like big data & A.I and the process for transactions like bank money transfers and online payments as well as a platform for opinions like facebook and twitter would have never existed.

In years since the invention of the first computers by Charles Babbage in the early 1800s, the process of evolution started, this can be considered as big bang theory for the digital revolution. It took many years to let people adapt to the culture but the big step towards digital would be on 80’s & 90’s, the process of first digital computers, computing power and storage capacity were innovated & combined with the World Wide Web and the Internet, digital media has transformed 21st century society in a way that is frequently compared to the cultural, economic and social impact.

“One small step to the digital world and one big leap to the mankind.”

Adaptability was a huge problem during times, but looking at the bright side of it, Communication made simple & easy, Industrial economy transformation, effective cost management & transition of a new form of media called “Digital Media” and many more disruptive activities divided world before the digital age and after digital age.

In classrooms, passionate teachers leverage technology to create engaging new assignments and projects where students can mash up content and use tools in ways unforeseen previously.

But unfortunately, there is always a downside to every great innovation.

The rate of change in the digital realm is exponential. The volume of our personal information that is stored by Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple and other digital supergiants is nothing short of disturbing and the Internet of things (IoT) is spreading like wildfire.

Webcam you watch your house with, the smart controls in vehicles and digital assistants like Siri and Alexa all offer access points for hackers to invade privacy and take down networks. Social media is being “weaponized” before our very own eyes.

It’s a big debate from years about the privacy of a person and using private information for third-party business purposes.

A new stream of content (Individual content developer)

Digital media has also allowed individuals to be much more active in content creation. Anyone with access to computers and the Internet can participate in social media and contribute their own writing, art, videos, photography, and commentary to the Internet, as well as conduct business online.

The logistical & equipment cost reduction gave an opportunity to create and share content have led to a democratization of content creation as well as the creation of new types of content, like blogs, memes, and video vlogs etc.

And this gave an opportunity to the web-based industry as payment portals, fin-tech companies, web shopping & web-based movies and short film production. As there are no constitution rules on obscure language or business models based on online, it gave an opportunity to create innovative models and share true journalism.

When the question comes about how effective our decisions are towards digital media and how impactful they are when something is recommended, an inclined pattern can be seen in all these years, the life cycle of a viral Meme or and virility of a celebrity news can show the speed and influence digital media makes and impacts on human behavior, there is a proper study on understanding and connecting this dots and the study called Media Psychology.

Much advancement are made such as Media Psychology in different dimensions to monitor human behavior patterns, cybersecurity to protect from fraudulent activities & many more

In a Nutshell:

When we look back towards where we started, we see a steady growth of knowledge and adaptability of new technology and sometimes left old realities like television, radio, pagers, letters and many more.

If you ask me I would say, it’s not the strongest or the smarter but most adaptable survives in this world, digital media fit to present human needs and their speed, people don’t wait 2 to 3 days to get a letter for a company they expect an e-mail it. People don’t wait for prime time news 8 pm; they twitter it, at the end the process of transferring message hasn’t gone it just changed its form.

It isn’t a new form of communication it’s just a new form of MEDIUM.
