In the late 1920s, Kapil Ram Vakil, a chemical engineer educated in England, saw the possibility of developing a salt works in the Kutch region, now in the state of Gujarat. He approached the then Maharaja of Baroda, Sayaji Rao Gaekwad. Always keen to develop his princely state, the Maharaja gave his assent. In 1927, Vakil set up the Okha Salt Works. A decade later, Vakil wanted to expand and set up a soda ash plant but did not have the financial resources required. He approached the Tata’s. They agreed to take over the company and Tata Chemicals was born in 1939. Vakil stayed on as its director.
They produce a wide range of chemicals (Soda ash, NaOH etc.), fertilizers (Tata Paras –Urea, STP, SSP etc.), biofuels & Cement (Tata Shudh).
Now in 2nd largest Soda Ash producer globally, 143 million households consume Tata Salt each month&
6000+ employees work for that across 4 continents, revenues over USD: 2.4 Billion (15,000 crores)
Notable mentions: Tata Swach, it’s a water purifier developed by Tata Chemicals, a part of the Tata group in India.Swach was designed as a low-cost purifier for Indian low-income groups, who lack access to safe drinking water.
Tata Engineering is also one of the main source of both revenue & brand trust, starting from a construction of building, equipment, tools, machinery, logistics to management of B2B requirement of product management tools, machinery, Product Lifecycle Management, Information Technology, Automotive, Aerospace, Construction and Heavy Machinery, Manufacturing, Digital Manufacturing, all this product lines are under Tata Technologies.
Consumer goods and products to home appliances are also managed by a Voltas which is managed by Tata group. Volta’s manufacture, HVAC, air conditioning, refrigeration products.
Tata also is into Oil & Gas, Metals & minerals business under name brand name of Tata Projects.

Tata Motors limited or previously called Tata engineering & locomotive company. They create a different range of cars from a middle class 4 wheeler i.e., Tata Nano to a luxury brand Tata Jaguar & Landrover. Tata Nano: The Nano was launched in 2009 as a city car intended to appeal as an affordable alternative to the section of the Indian populace that is primarily the owner of motorcycles and has not bought their first car. Initially priced at ₹100,000 (US$1,500). It went to Guinness book of world records for lowest price car available in the market in 2009.
Tata Ace: Tata Ace, India’s first indigenously developed sub-one-ton mini-truck, was launched in May 2005. The mini-truck was a huge success in India that had changed the dynamics of the light commercial vehicle (LCV) market in the country by creating a new market segment termed the small commercial vehicle segment. Ace is still a top seller for TML with 500,000 units sold by June 2010.
Tata 407 (Light Commercial Vehicle): The Tata 407 is a light commercial vehicle (LCV) that has sold over 500,000 units since its launch in 1986. In India, this vehicle dominates market share of the LCV category, accounting for close to 75% of LCV sales.

Taj Hotels: The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCLbranded as Taj Hotels Palaces Resorts Safaris is an international chain of hotels and resorts headquartered at Express Towers, Nariman Point in Mumbai. Incorporated by the founder of the Tata Group, Jamsetji Tata, in 1903, the company is a part of the Tata Group, one of India’s largest business conglomerates. The company employed over 13,000 people in the year 2010.
As of 2017, the company operates a total of 99 hotels and hotel-resorts, with 83 across India and 16 in other countries, including Bhutan, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, UAE, UK, USA, and Zambia. And their revenue is ₹4,706.27 crore(US$730 million).

It’s technically impossible for a set of board members & a single chairperson to handle more than 100 ventures in 60 countries and their functionalities as well as a revenue stream. Something is missing here, this company Is different they still survived from that big confusion of a lot of ventures and different flows of revenue streams. Not just they survived they were even top in almost all that industries. Why?
Let me tell you a small comparison that might convince the formula for the solution. Imagine there are two kinds of businessmen, the first type who himself or his team is an expert in an art form or knowledge in an industry and they form an organization with like-minded people and they might even earn some money through it but I am pretty much sure that the boss knows everything about that particular industry.
