Students at Swachh Bharat Summer Internship


In the accomplishment of the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission launched as a national movement on October 2nd, 2014, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, in association with the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, launched a ‘Swachh Bharat Summer Internship’ programme where the students of the higher educational institutions, had to promote cleanliness by taking up projects and spending an approximate duration of 100 hours in the village selected by them.

In guidance with the Nodal Officer assigned by the institution, the students were supposed to complete the projects and then report on the activities conducted during the internship period on the Government website with the best interns to be awarded cash prizes at the national level with Rs 2 lakh, Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 with certificates. At the university level, students were given Rs 30,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 with certificates, and the state level students Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 with certificates.

The work included constructing and repairing toilets for installing sewage management system, setting up waste management plants, building a vermicompost chamber and growing awareness in the rural areas.

The college students of Mumbai participated in the initiative, surveyed the toilets constructed in the rural areas, visited a waste-to-energy plant and learn how the project powers streetlights with electricity generated from household waste to help in the village.

They were also taught to communicate effectively and patiently with residents while creating awareness on waste segregation by the BMC officials and were told to interact with village leaders to understand their issues.

What all students need to do

In this summer internship, it is expected that the students will not only participate in the overall cleanliness in the villages or slums but would also help in setting up systems for sustaining cleanliness and sanitation efforts under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
